Red Sox Scratch Out a Tough Win Over Niagara

June 25th, 2017 by

The Milton Red Sox took advantage of eight Niagara Metro walks to score five runs in the 4th to surge ahead 6-3 after four innings, and most importantly, employed timely hitting to add on to the total in the 7th and 8th innings to eventually emerge as 9-5 winners on a sunny Saturday afternoon in Milton.

Jason Schneider, returning to the mound this season after a 5-year absence, earned the win with a 5 1/3 inning start surrendering three ERs on five hits, five walks, while striking out four Metro hitters. Milton’s defense aided his efforts with two outstanding middle-infield double-play. Javed Baksh appeared briefly in relief in the 6th inning before dependable lefty, Dan Todoschuk came on to frustrate the Niagara over the last 3 2/3 innings, holding Niagara scoreless while surrendering just a pair of hits and walking none to register his third save of the season.

Brett Medland tracked two tough fly-balls into the sun in right field during the late innings to quell Metro threats. The Metros 7-hit offence was led by Ricki Ferri with three hits that included a double. Ex Red Sox Troy Findlay also had a pair of singles and a walk.

Milton hammered out 14 hits on the day led by middle-infielders Don Smith who registered four hits, a SB, and an RBI as well as Gabe Boulanger with three hits and a pair of RBIs. Veteran 1st baseman Kevin Cooper and newcomer, Nick Feren, counted two hits and an RBI each, while Kevin Greer with an RBI double, Dan Apostoli with a single and two RBIs, and Riaz Baksh with a single and hustle on the base-paths, rounded out Milton’s attack.

Milton is off until next Wednesday night when Whitey’s high-flying Etobicoke Rangers come to town for a 7:30 pm start. Thursday night they head to Brampton for a 7:15 pm start against the Royals.
