July 4th, 2017 by

The Etobicoke Rangers pitchers held the Niagara Metros to two earned runs and four hits last night as they edged the Metros 3-2 in St. Catharines. The Ranger’s used four pitchers as starter Adam McBride threw a solid four innings, Brent Cleland (3-1) threw two innings and picks up the win. Tyler Whealy had a 1-2-3 7th inning and then turned the ball over to big Kyle Breitner for the 8th and 9th as Breitner picked up his 3rd save as he did not give up a hit and struck out two to preserve the Ranger win.

The Rangers took an early 1-0 lead when lead off hitter CF Alex Thrower singled, stole 2nd and came around to score on a ground out by C Tanner Young-Shultz. The Rangers went up 2-0 in the 3rd inning when 3B Ryan Panas started the inning with a walk and then went to 3rd on a single by D/H A.J. Iafrate and then scored on another ground out by Young-Shultz.

The Metros narrowed the gap to 2-1 in the 4th when the Metros 1B Ryan Laird tagged a McBride pitch for a solo dinger. The Metros then tied the game in the 5th when their lead off hitter hit a fly ball to RF which was misplayed by the Ranger defender and this run came in to score on a one out ground ball. Etobicoke came right back in the 6th to re-claim the lead when 2B Mark Capone led off with a double and scored on a Panas single.

The Ranger pitching made this lead hold up as they improved to a league best 12-4-1. The Rangers out hit the Metros 7-4 and Etobicoke left 15 base runners to the Metros four. Two Errors were made by the Rangers while the Metros had four miscues.

The Rangers return home this Friday when they play the Burlington Brants @ 7:30 and then in a rare Saturday afternoon home game the Rangers @ 5pm will make up the rain out from the season opener on May 5th when the game was rained out. The Brampton Royals are the visiting team.
