COBA Major League Well Represented in Provincial All-Star Teams

COBA Major League teams had another good season this year as was evidence by the number of players who were selected to the Ontario Sr Baseball Blog’s Annual Provincial All-Star Teams. This season there were an amazing 17 players (the most of any of the four senior loops in Ontario) selected to the three all-star teams as well as two people who grabbed year end major awards. The full write-up along with the final stats for each player can be found in the article located in the news section or by clicking the link below

2017 Ontario Senior Baseball All-Star Teams

Congratulations to all 17 players and Adam McBride & Coach Breitner who were selected to their respective teams and awards. Each of you had a fantastic season and are well deserving of the provincial nod. Also a big thank you to G for sorting and combing through stats to come up with these teams again this season.

Etobicoke Rangers Capture 2017 COBA Major Playoff Title

The Etobicoke Rangers capped off a very impressive season on Sunday in Milton capturing the COBA Major League Playoff Championship. This was the one title that eluded the Rangers over the last few seasons as this was their first title since 2006. Etobicoke won the title by running the table and defeating the defending champion Erindale Cardinals 4-3 in a very entertaining final game.

Congratulations to Steve Breitner and the whole Etobicoke club on a very good run through the playoffs and a great season over all. Also a big thank you to Glenn Turner and the Milton Red Sox organization for hosting this year’s event again ands making sure that the fields were in tip top shape after each game.

So ends another season of COBA Major League play, I would like to thank everyone for following along this year. It is always a pleasure to cover and update our league and senior baseball across Ontario. All four leagues have been getting stronger each year and senior baseball seems to be heading in a great direction. Hope to see everyone around in 2018.

Breitner, Grant Added to Rosters for Nationals

With the 2017 edition of the Canadian Senior Men’s Baseball Tournament coming up this week, two COBA Major League players have been added to the two rosters to help Ontario in Victoria, BC.

Kyle Breitner of the Etobicoke Rangers was picked up once again by the Tecumseh Thunder to help supplement their pitching staff. This is the 4th year in a row that Breitner has gone with the Thunder organization. Breitner had a great season for the Rangers going 5-1 with a 3.00 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP in 60 innings of work. The versatile righty also collected four saves while striking out 75 and walking 28 batters this season.

Jordan Grant had another solid season this year at SS for the Niagara Metros and was nabbed by the Mississauga SW Twins. Grant, who is capable at playing middle infield and 3rd base, hit .350 (42-for-120) this season good for second on the club. He collected 12 doubles, one triple and three HRs while driving in 30 runs and scoring another 26.

This year’s tournament kicks off on Wednesday with the home run derby and festivities while game action gets under way Thursday morning. Congratulations to both Kyle and Jordan on their respective selections to each team. Also we wish the two-time defending champion Tecumseh Thunder and the Mississauga SW Twins the best of luck as both teams push for a Canadian Men’s Baseball Title.

It was an emotional night last night at the Rogers Center in Toronto as Etobicoke Rangers veteran bench boss Steve “Whitey” Breitner was honored by the Toronto Blue Jays organization for his service and commitment to baseball both for the Etobicoke Rangers Senior Baseball Club as well as the province of Ontario. Click the link below which will take you to the story about the night at the Rogers Center which was summed up beautifully by Bob Elliott (@elliottbaseball) at the Canadian Baseball Network.

2017 Ontario Senior AAA Elimination Champions – Tecumseh Thunder

In what was one of the craziest finals in some time, the Tecumseh Thunder Sr Baseball Club captured their 4th consecuative Ontario Sr AAA Baseball Title by defeating the Mississauga SW Twins 17-12 in front of a pretty good crowd at beautiful Labatt Park in London.

The first inning featured some fireworks as SW jumped out of the gates with a quick six runs off of Shane Courtney and reliever Brandon Lindquist. Not phased though, the Thunder answers back with 10 runs of their own off Twins starter Billy Martin and relievers James Byrnes and Kyle Porter.

Tecumseh continued to tack on as they took a 17-8 lead into the 7th inning. Mississauga went down swinging though as they were able to add four runs chasing Lindquist from the game but Eric Carducci entered and shut the door.

Congratulations to Jamie Kell and the whole Tecumseh Thunder organization on another solid run at the eliminations. Also a big congrats to Mississauga Twins on another solid run and punching a ticket to Victoria, BC along with the Thunder later this month. Big shout out to the Etobioke Rangers who had an amazing run through the weekend as well coming up just short of a finals berth. Both teams represented COBA with a ton of class and respect.

Finally a big thank you to the Strathroy Royals and their host committee for putting on this years event. The weather was a bit shaky to start but the venues and hospitality was amazing making for another solid event. Looking forward to it again in 2018.

The Etobicoke Rangers captured the Hap Walters Invitational Tournament title on Sunday in Milton with a hard fought 6-5 win over COBA league mates the Niagara Metros. It is their 2nd Hap Walters title with their last coming in 2003 when they defeated the Markham Mariners.

After starting off with a tough loss Friday night 3-2 against the East York Bulldogs, the Rangers ran the table the rest of the way defeating Ilderton (11-1) and Thornhill (6-2) in the round robin. They followed that up with a QF win over the Mississauga SW Twins (6-0) and a SF win over the Bulldogs (2-0) before defeating Niagara in a very entertaining finale.

Congratulations to Steve “Whitey” Brietner and the whole Etobicoke Rangers baseball team on a very good showing during the weekend.

2017 Lakeside Invitational Tournament Information

The Sarnia Braves completed a very impressive weekend in London today as they defeated the Leaside Leafs 5-0 in the championship game of the 2017 Lakeside Invitaional Tourmanent at Dan Pulham Field.

The Braves went 5-0 in the tournament defeating the Oakville A’s, Woodslee Orioles and St Thomas Tomcats in the round robin. After receiving a bye for the playoffs, they followed that up with a semi-final win over the Ilderton Red Army 1-0 before defeating Leaside.
